Description

Rookie Softball is an entry level of instructional play. Players may have one or more years of experience in T-ball prior to their first year in Rookie Softball.

Players will learn fundamental skills of softball, teamwork, respect for coaches and umpires, and the basic rules of the game in a FUN environment.

Learning Objectives

Hitting: Players learn the fundamentals of hitting emphasizing eyes focusing on the ball; stride position; and rotating the hips.

Base Running: Players learn the fundamentals of base running, emphasizing hitting the corner of the base; running through or rounding the base; and starting in the proper softball stance at a base.

Throwing: Players learn the fundamental 2 or 3 finger grip of the ball; proper stance; starting in the "T" position; stepping toward the target; and follow through.

Fielding: Players learn basic fielding skills emphasizing eyes on the ball at all times; fielding ground balls from the "pinkie-to-pinkie" position; and starting position of each defensive position.

Catching: Players will learn the fundamentals of catching including a catcher's stance and hand position; and throwing the ball back to the pitcher.

Season

Registration: Registration for the spring season will begin in December and continue through mid February. Late registration may be offered in March, depending on remaining openings on teams; late fee may be assessed.

Practices: Practices are organized by the team manager with assistance from volunteer coaches. Recommended practice frequency is two times a week during the pre-season (starting in early March); and once a week during the season. Practices will be held at local school fields in the Edmonds School District.

Games: Teams will participate in two games a week during the regular season, typically one weeknight game and one weekend game (Friday night or Saturday). Game schedules will be available at least one week prior to the start of game play. Home games will be held at the Alderwood Little League complex. If less than 4 teams exist, teams will participate in inter-league play with another league (s) in Snohomish County.

Games are limited to a maximum of 6 innings or 2 hours in length. Games utilize a continuous batting order; 10 defensive players each inning; and balanced playing time. No scores or standings are kept. Game play will be in accordance with Little League Rules and Local rules.

Season: The eight week season typically starts the week following the Edmonds School District spring break and extends until the weekend after Memorial Day; for a total of 14 to 16 games. See annual calendar for dates.
